SPIN FINISHES

Spin finishes are formulations of lubricants, emulsifiers and antistatic agents.

After the extrusion of man-made fibres they are applied undiluted or as an emulsion to the fibres or filaments in order to enable a trouble-free manufacturing process.

Staple fibre

Zschimmer & Schwarz offers a range of various spin finishes for the production of staple fibres for technical and hygienic nonwovens. Additionally, the field of fibre-fill production, for example for bedding, furniture and warm clothing, is ideally covered, as is the production of short-cut fibres. The extensive product portfolio is rounded off by finishes for subsequent application to fibres.

NEEDLE PUNCH

Staple fibres produced from PP (Polypropylene) or PES (Polyester) can be processed into needle punched nonwovens, among other things. Fibres which have been manufactured with Zschimmer & Schwarz products fulfil a particularly high quality standard: very good processing properties are a must. Depending on their intended use, they also meet the other high requirements, such as low emissions.

When used in geotextiles, for example, their main purpose is to stabilise the ground, for instance during road construction work.
On the other hand, in the automotive industry, low fogging behaviour and a minimal tendency to yellowing are essential for automotive carpets and headliners.
The use of staple fibres in carpets and mats requires high wear resistance, good antistatic properties and a "living appearance".

HYDROENTANGLEMENT

The water-jet process, also known as hydro entanglement, spunlace or hydro-jet, is a mechanical binding process in which the fibres or filaments are entangled by means of high-pressure water jets instead of, for example, steel needles (as in the case of needle-punched nonwovens). One advantage of these spunlaced nonwovens provides a soft textile handle.

Common spunlaced products are:

  • Wipes, towels, tissues
  • Artificial leather
  • Sanitary products
THERMOBONDED

Thermobonded staple fibre nonwovens are frequently used in the hygiene sector, where they are mostly known as the top sheet (uppermost covering layer in a diaper) or as the ADL (acquisition distribution layer inside the diaper). Due to their voluminous structure, they have a special softness and, thanks to capillary forces, a pronounced absorption capacity.

The variety of products satisfies all customer wishes and requirements: whether hydrophilic with FDA compliance, super-hydrophilic or – for special applications – finishing as after-treatment in order to provide hydrophilic fibres a hydrophobic character – our spin finishes for staple fibre production impress all along the line.

FIBRE-FILL

During the production of PES fibre-fill, the main focus is on the specific feel and bulk volume. Here, the fibre softness depends on the final application: for example, particularly soft fibres are used for pillow fillings, while fibres with a harsh handle are used for filling furniture.

Typical applications for fibre-fill:
Cushions, pillows, clothes, furniture, duvets, sleeping bags, jackets, mattresses

Specific requirements for fibre-fill:
High specific volume, elastic expansion/compression pressure, thermal insulation, washability, smoothness

YARN APPLICATION

Textile yarns made of PES staple fibres can be used for cotton- and wool-type fabrics, additionally PAN fibres are also being frequently used. Yarn spinning is carried out by means of ring, rotor spinning (OE) or airjet spinning. Special applications, such as drinking filters made of PP, are often produced by DREF spinning.

SHORT-CUT FIBRE

Short-cut fibres have a length of just a few millimetres, no crimping and are mainly produced from PP and PES. The main focus here is on good fibre distribution.

Typical applications for short-cut fibres:

  • Concrete reinforcement
  • Paper reinforcement
  • Fibre-reinforced composites
CIGARETTE FILTER TOW

The tow for cigarette filters is manufactured from cellulose acetate (CA) or polypropylene (PP).
The spin finish enables not only a reliable spinning process, but also fulfils the high quality requirements for cigarette filters.

GLASS FIBRE

Glass fibres are used for the production of yarns and tow, or as short-cut fibres. Yarns have a diameter of ≤ 9 μm per fibre, tows a diameter of ≥ 10 μm per fibre. Short-cut fibres are mainly used for the production of nonwoven mats and fibre-reinforced composite materials.

TECHNICAL YARN

Industrial yarns are understood to be all types of yarns that are predominantly used in industrial applications. Most of these yarns have very high tenacities in order to satisfy the specific quality requirements of the fabrics in this field.

Spin finishes for these applications are developed in such a way that the yarns properties required for their subsequent processing are already provided in the extrusion process. Depending on the polymer type, the spin finishes are temperature-resistant up to 250 °C and therefore also ideally suited for state-of-the-art spinning processes. They give the yarn optimum properties, both for further processing and for various types of coatings of the final fabrics.

MONOFILAMENT AND TAPE

Monofilaments are produced in various thicknesses – from a few micrometres up to several millimetres. Fine filaments are intended for the production of filter fabrics or in printing stencils, whereby coarser monofilaments are known as bristles (brush production).

The spin finishes have the task of ensuring good anti-static properties and low levels of friction even at very low oil pick-ups.

Tapes are used for the production of e.g. carpet backing and packaging materials. If they are used for the production of artificial grass, they must meet special requirements – for example good knot stability. The main task of the spin finish in this application area is also to ensure low levels of friction during twisting, weaving and tufting. If packaging materials are involved, the individual components have to be checked with regard to their authorisation for use with foodstuffs.

Textile yarn

For the production of textile yarns, the comfort properties of the end product are becoming increasingly important in addition to high production efficiency. In the area of clothing, for example, we are seeing a trend towards finer and finer yarns. This is associated with the need for increasingly high-performance spin finishes.

The products made by Zschimmer & Schwarz already meet all of the requirements today: they guarantee a smooth process during the production of the thread and further processing into a textile fabric and stand out in meeting some customers’ specifications with regard to reduced emissions. Our motto: the future is today.

POY

Spin finishes for the production of partially oriented yarn (POY) are particularly responsible for the subsequent processing into a high quality textured yarn.

FDY

In addition to the high quality demand during the production of FDY / flat yarns, the spin finish also enables the further efficient processing into knitted or woven fabrics.

BCF CARPET YARN

A large proportion of the textile floor coverings are produced from BCF yarn (bulked continuous filament).

Our BCF spin finishes for PP, PA or PES/PTT contribute towards stable yarn production processes on all common spinning machine types and during further processing. They are also suitable for special applications such as yarns with a soft handle, as well as low-dpf yarns with fine single-filament titres.

PP-CF YARN

PP-CF yarns (continuous filament yarns) are used for a large number of applications, such as big-bag sewing yarns, nets, ropes or belts.

Our PP-CF spin finishes for high- and medium-tenacity yarns contribute to stable production processes. We offer types suitable for direct or emulsion application, or compatible with FDA / EU 10/2011.
