Water treatment

Global population growth, a general increase in living standards and also for example, the higher demand for agricultural irrigation, is leading to an increased demand for usable water.

And although about 70% of the earth's surface is covered by water, only a very small part is directly usable for the supply of industrial and drinking water.

Due to this rising demand, both the efficient use of water and the conversion of seawater into industrial and drinking water are becoming more and more important.

During the extraction, purification and recycling of water, problems – in particular those associated with scale and corrosion, such as plant damage or shortened operating times and cleaning intervals – need to be avoided or at least reduced. In other areas, deposits can lead to significant losses in energy yield. Zschimmer & Schwarz offers efficient and eco-friendly additives to improve the performance of industrial water treatment plants.

Products

With our water treatment chemicals and our specialised services, we want to make an important contribution to meeting this challenge by reducing the problems that can occur during water treatment and maximising process efficiency. At Zschimmer & Schwarz, we offer efficient and environmentally friendly additives to improve the performance of both industrial and drinking water treatment plants.

Antiscalants

Antiscalants are additives capable of preventing the accumulation of sparingly soluble salts in water. Therefore, they are indispensable products in most water treatment systems.

One of their main applications is in reverse osmosis systems, where they prevent the incrustation of the membranes. However, they are also used in other systems where scalings can lead to a loss of performance, for example in cooling towers.

At Zschimmer & Schwarz, we offer a range of antiscalants that can prevent the formation of sediment and maximise the performance of the system in which they are used. Within our antiscalant range, there are products that have the NSF certification required in reverse osmosis, for example, so they are accredited for contact with drinking water.

A selection of our antiscalants, some of which are NSF-certified:

  • CUBLEN A 4015
  • CUBLEN D 5113
  • CUBLEN BTP 480
  • CUBLEN MA
  • CUBLEN ROT 152
Defoamers

A defoamer is an additive often used in industrial processes that is capable of reducing or eliminating the formation of foam in a liquid. Foam formed on the surface of the aqueous phase can interfere with water-based production processes, as it, for example, reduces the heat exchange surface and thus decreases the energy efficiency of the processes.

Zschimmer & Schwarz offers different types of defoamers with different chemical structures to suit your area of application.

A selection of our defoamers:

  • CONTRASPUM 300
  • CONTRASPUM M 4053
  • CONTRASPUM W CONC
Corrosion inhibitors

Corrosion is a natural process in which a material is damaged by chemical reactions. Although corrosion can be divided into many categories, in the water treatment sector corrosion caused by diatomic oxygen (O2) is predominant: the reaction occurs between metal and oxygen, forming its metal oxide. Therefore, systems containing water, such as closed heat exchange or heat storage systems, require corrosion inhibitors in order to prevent damage to the system.

At Zschimmer & Schwarz, we offer a wide range of corrosion inhibitors that will increase the performance of your system, prevent damage and reduce operating costs.

A selection of our corrosion inhibitors:

  • PHOSPHETAL 2-EH
  • PHOSPHETAL 2280
  • PHOSPHETAL DA
  • PHOSPHETAL TDA
  • CUBLEN H
  • CUBLEN HK
  • PHOSFETAL 201
  • PHOSFETAL 205
  • PHOSFETAL 213
  • PHOSFETAL 218
Dispersants

Dispersants are chemical compounds that are added to a suspension in order to improve the separation between particles. They are needed because, in many cases, water systems contain contaminating solids, which tend to settle.

Zschimmer & Schwarz offers a range of dispersant additives that promote the compatibility of the solid with the water system, thus preventing settling and facilitating its treatment by a solids removal system.

  • CUBLEN MD 70 N
  • CUBLEN PAA 40 TN

Applications

Chemical auxiliaries for water treatment
During the extraction, purification and recycling of water, difficulties in particular those associated with scale and corrosion, must be avoided or at least reduced. Zschimmer & Schwarz offers chemical auxiliaries for a wide range of applications in the water treatment sector. From cooling towers to boiler systems, through desalination and/or geothermal plants, you can rely on custom-made chemical additives from Zschimmer & Schwarz to master challenges and improve the efficiency of your production processes.

Cooling water treatment

At Zschimmer & Schwarz, we offer cooling water treatment additives to prevent scaling and corrosion, which reduce energy efficiency and cause damage to the plant. It must be considered that cooling water treatment is systemic. So, the individual components for scale and corrosion inhibition, dispersion and prevention of biological scaling must be well balanced.

A selection of our additives for cooling towers:

  • CUBLEN MA
  • CUBLEN MD 70 N
  • CUBLEN P 4014
Boiler water treatment

Typical problems associated with boiler systems involve the formation of deposits of poorly soluble salts such as calcium and magnesium carbonate and corrosion of metal parts. To prevent this, Zschimmer & Schwarz offers high-quality products for boiler water treatment.

A selection of our additives for boiler water treatment:

  • CUBLEN K 60
  • CUBLEN AP 5
  • CUBLEN D 5113
Raw water treatment – membrane separation process

Dispersants increase the effectiveness of corrosion inhibition. Depending on the quality of the water used and the type of installation, different chemicals will be used.

Successful antiscalant treatment in membrane separation processes results in prolonged cleaning intervals. This increases the service life of the membrane modules with safe scaling removal and lowest possible membrane attack.

A selection of our additives for raw water treatment:

  • CUBLEN A 4015
  • CUBLEN AP 5
  • CUBLEN D 5113
  • CUBLEN F 3016
  • CUBLEN K60
  • CUBLEN ROT 152
Reverse osmosis

Membrane separation methods include reverse osmosis and nanofiltration. These systems involve selective "molecule filtration" using special polymer membranes. The membrane is permeable to small water molecules, while preventing the passage of larger molecules and ions (such as cations and anions from inorganic salts). The concentration on the raw water side causes supersaturation effects, resulting in the precipitation of poorly soluble salts.

Zschimmer & Schwarz antiscalants are very useful in reverse osmosis systems as they suppress the precipitation of the sparingly soluble salts formed by the supersaturation of the raw water. This increases the service life of the reverse osmosis membranes. In addition, we offer a range of products with NSF certification, which is required for drinking water production.

A selection of our NSF-certified additives for reverse osmosis systems:

  • CUBLEN A 4015
  • CUBLEN AP 5
  • CUBLEN D 5113
  • CUBLEN F 3016
  • CUBLEN K 60
Seawater treatment – MSF

MSF (multi-stage flash evaporation) involves a gradual evaporation of salt water at temperatures above 100 °C and at reduced pressure. The resulting isolated condensate is salt-free and can be reused, while the water remaining in the evaporator is returned to the sea with a much higher salt load.

Zschimmer & Schwarz products for seawater treatment help to avoid problems resulting from salt deposits in evaporators and corrosion caused mainly by high salt loads.

A selection of our additives for seawater treatment:

  • CUBLEN A 4015
  • CUBLEN K 2222
  • CUBLEN K 4023
Geothermal energy production

Geothermal energy is a clean, renewable energy source, which harnesses the heat stored in the earth's interior. The production of geothermal energy is therefore key to moving towards a sustainable and decarbonised world.

Zschimmer & Schwarz offers solutions to prevent the formation of sulphides and/or sulphates, which can significantly impair the efficiency of geothermal energy production within heat exchangers, as well as products to prevent corrosion, which can affect the respective process.

A selection of our additives for geothermal energy production:

  • CUBLEN BTP 480
  • CUBLEN D 5113
