Zschimmer & Schwarz researches ecological fire protection for rail vehicles together with partners

Together with a university and a manufacturer of wood products, the speciality chemicals supplier is working on an innovative fire protection varnish

The Zschimmer & Schwarz Group, a global supplier of chemical auxiliaries and specialities headquartered in Lahnstein, Germany, – together with the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development and Rülke GmbH – is working on a new fire protection agent for use in rail vehicle construction. The aim of the research project is the development of a transparent fire protection varnish that will enable wood-based materials to be used more extensively in interior fittings.

Volker Krebs, Global Director of the Paints & Coatings Division, is delighted about the collaboration with the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development and Rülke GmbH: “As a specialist in environmentally friendly, water-based polymer dispersions, we offer a broad portfolio of customised coating formulations for a wide variety of surfaces. In developing a water-based coating with an integrated fire protection retardant, we are working closely with our colleagues at the Mohsdorf site and can draw on their many years of expertise and know-how to bring ecology and economy to a common denominator. Our participation in this project represents an important step towards sustainable product development and is emphasising our commitment to innovation and environmental protection.”

About the project

In the research project “Flame-retardant coating: ecological fire protection in rail vehicles” (FlamenCo), Zschimmer & Schwarz is working in the subprojects 3 and 4 on the development of a flame protection agent based on phosphonic acids and a fire protection varnish based on phosphonic acids. The project is funded by the Fachagentur Nachwachsende Rohstoffe e. V. (FNR), which acts as the project management organisation of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture.
