Agrochemical industry

The agrochemical industry is a key sector of the global economy, involved in the production and commercialisation of chemicals used in agriculture. These are known as agrochemicals and are used to protect crops from diseases and pests, as well as to promote the proper development of crops.

In the coming decades, producing enough food for a growing world population will be a major challenge. To meet this demand, farmers need tools to increase the productivity of their crops and to cope with agricultural challenges such as drought, soil erosion and pests. This is where the importance of agrochemicals, such as fertilisers and disease and pest regulators, comes into play. With their help, agriculture will increase its productivity and efficiency, achieve higher outputs and minimise losses.

Zschimmer & Schwarz, partner of the agrochemical industry

Zschimmer & Schwarz has extensive knowledge of the technologies used in the manufacture of formulations for the agrochemical industry. As a result, we are able to develop formulations whose quality remains stable over time, guaranteeing their effectiveness throughout the shelf life of the product. Our efficient and environmentally friendly additives improve the performance of the final formulation and are tailored to individual customer requirements.

Oilfield

Crude oil and natural gas remain the world's most important energy resources. They are extracted in oilfields, where oil exploration and extraction operations are carried out. These operations can be complex and costly, often requiring the use of advanced technology and chemicals to overcome the challenges faced, for example the formation of deposits on production facilities, the reduction of permeability of oil formations, the separation of oil-water mixtures, foaming or corrosion of facilities. At the same time, environmental protection and compliance with the relevant environmental standards are of utmost importance.

Our chemicals for the oil industry

The oil industry uses a wide variety of chemicals in various processes such as oil exploration, extraction and refining.  At Zschimmer & Schwarz, we focus on oilfield chemistry, where we offer a wide range of sustainable additives to make crude oil production as effective and efficient as possible.

Our oilfield chemicals include surfactants, phosphonates and esters that act as antifoulants, corrosion inhibitors, defoamers, demulsifiers and more. With our oilfield chemical additives, we contribute to improving the quality of end products, such as fuels and lubricants, while increasing the efficiency of the oil industry.

Pulp & paper

Products manufactured by the pulp & paper industry are ubiquitous in our daily lives, from the daily newspaper over personal hygiene products to product packaging. Sustainability, increased use of secondary raw materials, optimisation of energy consumption and efficiency of input materials as well as higher environmental standards are important topics for this sector.

Zschimmer & Schwarz offers a wide range of efficient and environmentally friendly additives for pulp & paper that help to increase both the quantity and quality of production. Our main focus is on providing chemical solutions for paper production. For example, defoamers, dispersants, bleaching additives, antifoulants, defoamers and de-inking additives. We also offer additives for the chemical treatment of supporting infrastructure, e.g. water cycles and wastewater. In these areas, we are in direct contact with our customers but we are also cooperating with service companies worldwide that ensure a smooth local process for pulp and paper production.

Water treatment

Global population growth, a general increase in living standards and also for example, the higher demand for agricultural irrigation, is leading to an increased demand for usable water. And although about 70% of the earth's surface is covered by water, only a very small part is directly usable for the supply of industrial and drinking water.

Due to this rising demand, both the efficient use of water and the conversion of seawater into industrial and drinking water are becoming more and more important.

During the extraction, purification and recycling of water, problems – in particular those associated with scale and corrosion, such as plant damage or shortened operating times and cleaning intervals – need to be avoided or at least reduced. In other areas, deposits can lead to significant losses in energy yield. Zschimmer & Schwarz offers efficient and eco-friendly additives to improve the performance of industrial water treatment plants.

Products

With our water treatment chemicals and our specialised services, we want to make an important contribution to meeting this challenge by reducing the problems that can occur during water treatment and maximising process efficiency. At Zschimmer & Schwarz, we offer efficient and environmentally friendly additives to improve the performance of both industrial and drinking water treatment plants.

  • Antiscalants: Antiscalants are additives capable of preventing the accumulation of sparingly soluble salts in water. Therefore, they are indispensable products in most water treatment systems.

One of their main applications is in reverse osmosis systems, where they prevent the incrustation of the membranes. However, they are also used in other systems where scalings can lead to a loss of performance, for example in cooling towers.

At Zschimmer & Schwarz, we offer a range of antiscalants that can prevent the formation of sediment and maximise the performance of the system in which they are used. Within our antiscalant range, there are products that have the NSF certification required in reverse osmosis, for example, so they are accredited for contact with drinking water.

    A selection of our antiscalants:
    • CUBLEN A 4015
    • CUBLEN D 5113
    • CUBLEN BTP 480
    • CUBLEN MA
    • CUBLEN ROT 152
  • Defoamers:  A defoamer is an additive often used in industrial processes that is capable of reducing or eliminating the formation of foam in a liquid. Foam formed on the surface of the aqueous phase can interfere with water-based production processes, as it, for example, reduces the heat exchange surface and thus decreases the energy efficiency of the processes.

Zschimmer & Schwarz offers different types of defoamers with different chemical structures to suit your area of application.

    A selection of our defoamers:
    • CONTRASPUM 300
    • CONTRASPUM M 4053
    • CONTRASPUM W CONC.
  • Corrosion inhibitors: Corrosion is a natural process in which a material is damaged by chemical reactions. Although corrosion can be divided into many categories, in the water treatment sector corrosion caused by diatomic oxygen (O2) is predominant: the reaction occurs between metal and oxygen, forming its metal oxide. Therefore, systems containing water, such as closed heat exchange or heat storage systems, require corrosion inhibitors in order to prevent damage to the system.

At Zschimmer & Schwarz, we offer a wide range of corrosion inhibitors that will increase the performance of your system, prevent damage and reduce operating costs.

A selection of our corrosion inhibitors:
    • PHOSPHETAL 2-EH
    • PHOSPHETAL 2280
    • PHOSPHETAL DA
    • PHOSPHETAL TDA
    • CUBLEN H
    • CUBLEN HK
    • PHOSFETAL 201
    • PHOSFETAL 205
    • PHOSFETAL 213
    • PHOSFETAL 218
  • Dispersants: Dispersants are chemical compounds that are added to a suspension in order to improve the separation between particles. They are needed because, in many cases, water systems contain contaminating solids, which tend to settle.

Zschimmer & Schwarz offers a range of dispersant additives that promote the compatibility of the solid with the water system, thus preventing settling and facilitating its treatment by a solids removal system.

    A selection of our dispersants:
    • CUBLEN MD 70 N
    • CUBLEN PAA 40 TN
Applications

During the extraction, purification and recycling of water, difficulties in particular those associated with scale and corrosion, must be avoided or at least reduced. Zschimmer & Schwarz offers chemical auxiliaries for a wide range of applications in the water treatment sector. From cooling towers to boiler systems, through desalination and/or geothermal plants, you can rely on custom-made chemical additives from Zschimmer & Schwarz to master challenges and improve the efficiency of your production processes.

  • Cooling water treatment: At Zschimmer & Schwarz, we offer cooling water treatment additives to prevent scaling and corrosion, which reduce energy efficiency and cause damage to the plant. It must be considered that cooling water treatment is systemic. So, the individual components for scale and corrosion inhibition, dispersion and prevention of biological scaling must be well balanced.

A selection of our additives for cooling towers:
    • CUBLEN MA
    • CUBLEN MD 70 N
    • CUBLEN P 4014
  • Boiler water treatment: Typical problems associated with boiler systems involve the formation of deposits of poorly soluble salts such as calcium and magnesium carbonate and corrosion of metal parts. To prevent this, Zschimmer & Schwarz offers high-quality products for boiler water treatment.

A selection of our additives for boiler water treatment:
    • CUBLEN K 60
    • CUBLEN AP 5
    • CUBLEN D 5113
  • Raw water treatment – membrane separation process: Dispersants increase the effectiveness of corrosion inhibition. Depending on the quality of the water used and the type of installation, different chemicals will be used.

Successful antiscalant treatment in membrane separation processes results in prolonged cleaning intervals. This increases the service life of the membrane modules with safe scaling removal and lowest possible membrane attack.

A selection of our additives for raw water treatment:
    • CUBLEN A 4015
    • CUBLEN AP 5
    • CUBLEN D 5113
    • CUBLEN F 3016
    • CUBLEN K60
    • CUBLEN ROT 152
  • Reverse osmosis: Membrane separation methods include reverse osmosis and nanofiltration. These systems involve selective "molecule filtration" using special polymer membranes. The membrane is permeable to small water molecules, while preventing the passage of larger molecules and ions (such as cations and anions from inorganic salts). The concentration on the raw water side causes supersaturation effects, resulting in the precipitation of poorly soluble salts.

Zschimmer & Schwarz antiscalants are very useful in reverse osmosis systems as they suppress the precipitation of the sparingly soluble salts formed by the supersaturation of the raw water. This increases the service life of the reverse osmosis membranes. In addition, we offer a range of products with NSF certification, which is required for drinking water production.

A selection of our NSF-certified additives for reverse osmosis systems:
    • CUBLEN A 4015
    • CUBLEN AP 5
    • CUBLEN D 5113
    • CUBLEN F 3016
    • CUBLEN K 60
  • Seawater treatment – MSF: MSF (multi-stage flash evaporation) involves a gradual evaporation of salt water at temperatures above 100 °C and at reduced pressure. The resulting isolated condensate is salt-free and can be reused, while the water remaining in the evaporator is returned to the sea with a much higher salt load.

Zschimmer & Schwarz products for seawater treatment help to avoid problems resulting from salt deposits in evaporators and corrosion caused mainly by high salt loads.

A selection of our additives for seawater treatment:
    • CUBLEN A 4015
    • CUBLEN K 2222
    • CUBLEN K 4023
  • Geothermal energy production: Geothermal energy is a clean, renewable energy source, which harnesses the heat stored in the earth's interior. The production of geothermal energy is therefore key to moving towards a sustainable and decarbonised world.

Zschimmer & Schwarz offers solutions to prevent the formation of sulphides and/or sulphates, which can significantly impair the efficiency of geothermal energy production within heat exchangers, as well as products to prevent corrosion, which can affect the respective process.

A selection of our additives for geothermal energy production:
    • CUBLEN BTP 480
    • CUBLEN D 5113

Construction chemicals

By building spaces for all kinds of different functions – from living over leisure and entertainment to health – the construction sector plays an important role in people’s lives.  According to data from the United Nations, the world population has more than doubled in the last 70 years, to 7 billion people in 2020, and is expected to increase to 9.3 billion by 2050. Therefore, the importance of residential buildings is continuously growing and the construction sector needs to be further developed – to optimise both the properties of the composites used and the environmental impact. For this reason, Zschimmer & Schwarz is developing different ranges of additives that will enable the industry to achieve their goals.

Products
  • Phosphonates: Phosphonates have a wide variety of applications in the industry. One of their main applications in construction is as set retarders, although they can also be used as a plasticisers. In many cases, a significant amount of time passes before the concrete is placed, either because it has to be transported over long distances or because the concrete placement conditions on site are slow.

Phosphonates can also help improve freeze-thaw resistance and salt resistance in cements, for example in high-temperature oil and gas well cementing operations.
The affinity of phosphonates to metallic surfaces leads to corrosion-inhibiting properties for reinforcement in reinforced concrete, but it can also positively influence the gas evolution from aluminum grit in the production of aerated concrete.

Certain phosphonates retard the setting of gypsum, an effect that extends the variety of possible applications. Zschimmer & Schwarz offers a wide range of phosphonates capable of maintaining the workability of concrete and gypsum for an extended period of time.

Phosphonates recommended as set retarders and plasticisers:
    • Solid products
      • CUBLEN E 34135 P
      • CUBLEN K 9012 GR / K 8514 GR
    • Liquid products
      • CUBLEN A 4015
      • CUBLEN D 5012 / CUBLEN D 3217 N
      • CUBLEN E 3115
      • CUBLEN F 3016
      • CUBLEN K 3014
      • CUBLEN P 4014
      • CUBLEN PEP 556
  • Surfactants: Surfactants are chemical compounds capable of reducing the surface tension between two phases. They are able to stabilise air bubbles within the concrete structure, providing a more fluid consistency, which is used to reduce water requirements. In addition, their application provides an improvement of different properties of the concrete, such as an increase in workability, durability, and thermal conductivity, together with a reduction in segregation and bleeding. Zschimmer & Schwarz offers a range of anionic surfactants capable of providing these properties in concrete.

Anionic and nonionic surfactants recommended as air-entraining agents:
    • PRODUKT EIAE 1460
    • PRODUKT EIAE 1470
    • PRODUKT EIAE 1480
    • PRODUKT EIAE 1490
  • Polymers: The water-cement ratio is a parameter that significantly affects the properties of concrete. Reducing the amount of water results in increased flexural and compressive strength, greater resistance to environmental conditions and a reduced tendency to shrinkage cracking. However, it also entails a loss of workability. There are several families of polymers synthesised to fluidise the mixture when added, thus compensating the workability loss caused by reducing water requirements. At Zschimmer & Schwarz, we offer several families of polymers capable of reducing the water requirements in the concrete mix.

    Polymers recommended as water reducers:
    • PRODUKT EIP 1370
    • PRODUKT EIP 1380
    • PRODUKT EIP 1390
  • Esters: Esters are used to prevent a material from adhering to a surface by providing a barrier between the surface of the mold and the substrate. In this way, removal and cleaning of the substrate are facilitated. Zschimmer & Schwarz offers a wide range of oils for this application.

Esters recommended as mold release agents:

Applications
  • Set retarders: In some cases, the setting time of concrete and gypsum has to be delayed. For example, concrete placement conditions may be slow on a particular building site, or concrete may need to be transported long distances before being placed.  At Zschimmer & Schwarz, we offer a range of set retarders that increase the setting time to guarantee the workability of concrete, without affecting the rest of its properties. In addition, the corrosion-inhibiting properties of certain set retarders can be beneficial.

      • CUBLEN PEP 556
  • Air-entraining agents: Although the main application of air-entraining agents is to increase the durability of concrete, there are other benefits such as an increase in workability and thermal conductivity, together with a reduction in bleeding and segregation. In addition, integrating air bubbles into the structure makes it possible to modify the consistency of the mix, thus reducing the need for water in the concrete.  This allows a greater amount of cement to be added to the mix, thereby increasing its strength. At Zschimmer & Schwarz, we have a wide range of anionic and nonionic surfactants, which are used as air-entraining agents.

In addition to surfactants, phosphonates can also be used as air-entraining agents. The reason for this is that the affinity of phosphonates for metal surfaces can positively influence the gas evolution of aluminum grit in the production of aerated concrete.

  • Water retarders: Many properties of concrete are determined by the water-cement ratio. By reducing the amount of water, concrete acquires greater flexural and compressive strength, reduced permeability, greater resistance to environmental conditions, and a lower tendency to shrinkage cracking. On the other hand, it also causes problems such as reduced workability. Zschimmer & Schwarz offers several polymers that can be used as water reducers. They increase the fluidity of the concrete, thus compensating for the loss of workability caused by water reduction. Plasticisers like phosphonates can also help optimise the amount of water required.

Anwendungen
