Primary surfactants are the most important components in cleaning formulations. However, cleaning is not the only functionality of surfactants. Apart from the well-known hygiene aspect by hand washing or gentle cleansing formulations in facial washes, there are additional technical features. One of the most important properties for consumers is the foam formation. Foam formation as well as the creaminess or for instance the stability of the foam depends mainly on the combination of the primary surfactants. From the technical point of view the surfactants are also used to adjust the viscosity of a formulation or influence the aspect and the stability of a cosmetic product. The different combinations of primary surfactants offer a real playground to the formulator.
